Cindy Elkrona at Rieke Elementary –

In the 2010-11 school year Portland Public Schools ran a campaign to reduce energy. If you met their goals your school could receive up to $2000 for your efforts. Cindy saw the opportunity not only to collect the reward, but continue on the path of “greening” the school and educating the kids in sustainability. PPS reprogrammed computers so they hibernate between uses and turn off at night. The green team reminded students and staff to be aware of their energy usage and had teachers unplug personal appliances after hours and encouraged everyone to turn off the lights. They were successful in their efforts and received the maximum $2000 incentive reward!
